The Pylon Initiative : The Expanding Typography Lexicon

I just love typography and the depth to which one can obsess about the nuances of type face, kerning and stroke weight. I've always been envious of the clever way that designers incorporate typography into their design. Due to the small number of cross-platform web friendly fonts we see less typography creativity online than in print, but thanks to creative engineering (SiFR, CSS image replacement etc) we're starting to see a rise in typography in web design and the internet is a more enjoyable place because of it. A fabulous subject for a blog post... However, the subject of this post is ...

Google Usage Still Rising, Yahoo Steady, MSN Falling

It's no secret - Google is the most widely used search engine in the marketplace. Hitwise has tracked  search engine usage over the years (amongst other things) and their data shows a steady increase in Google usage. [ 2007 hitwise report with 2006 data ] Who is Losing? So with Google's increase in popularity who is losing users? The answer is primarily MSN. Despite their best efforts to drive up usage of their Live search engine MSN continues to drop lower and lower on the totem pole. So low in fact that they are in real danger of being overtaken in populariy and usage ...

Google Keyword Tool To Get Search Volume Numbers?

As SEOers we're constantly weighing the value of one phrase against another to determine which phrases to write & optimize around. There have been a number of tools out there which have helped us in our quest to find the best phrases - in fact we've probably all used the now defunct Overture Tool, or Word Tracker with it's wonky multipliers, or even Keyword Discovery - but let's face it they all have their flaws. With-out official, reliable data directly from the search engines we do the best we can with the tools available to us - but our keyword research has always been plagued ...

Google Improves on Robots Exclusion Protocol

You may remember when Google took a step towards transparency in early 2007 when they started laying out tips on the 'how' & 'why' of using a robots.txt file in their January post "Controlling how search engines access and index your website", followed by "The Robots Exclusion Protocol" in February, and another mid-year follow-up that included some improvements in "Robots Exclusion Protocol: now with even more flexibility". Along that same time line we saw collaborative improvements to protocols for sitemaps including the unprecedented coordination of the Sitemaps.org that was a culmination of a Google experiment started back in 2005. The establishment ...

Google Crawls Javascript, News at 11!

In case you haven't noticed - Google is crawling JavaScript these days. Yah, I know. Just when you think you've pretty much got it all figured out, Google has to go and mix it up a bit. With their continued shift toward more intrusive crawling, Google has been striving to pierce the JavaScript veil and peak inside previously hidden content  -  and it's causing issues. While this is leading to improved crawability of many sites with dynamic navigation, it's also opening the door to some potentially damaging side effects including indexing pages purposely hidden from search engines, leading to duplicate content ...

    CapitalOne Leads the Swoosh Comeback

Rarely do students of branding and logo design get such a brilliant real life example of 'what NOT to do' in regards to logo design. [ AzAkers ] CapitalOne, the folks who brought us that catchy, albeit overly-curoious tagline "What's in your wallet?", have unveiled their new & "improved" logo (as of January 30th). While it won't win any design awards, the new logo is a boon for graphic design instructors, mentors and aspiring graphic artists alike, because rarely do students of branding and logo design get such a brilliant real life example of 'what NOT to do' in regards to logo ...

3 Reasons Why Xerox’s New Logo Is Just Fine

I love it when a well known company announces a revamped logo! The design blogs go crazy. For just a few brief paragraphs, we get the opportunity to rant about the butchering of a well known corporate logo, or rave about the beautifully executed modern interpretation of a stagnant brand. For a brief moment we are free to cast judgement, with-out fear of reprisal (unless someone calls us out in the comments). [singlepic=123,150,,,]Unfortunately for me however, I'm about a week late to the "Xerox screwed up on their new logo" party. All of the best comments have already been made. Nearly every conversation I've read contained ...

    The AdSense Rule Change Buzz

In a stunning blow to AdSense publishers everywhere, recent news of the upcoming Google AdSense's rule changes is sweeping the web. It looks like EVERYONE is ranting about it since EVERYONE in the AdSense publisher community (albeit some more than others). Being a passive publisher myself I only became aware of the changes today reading a post by Darren Rowse of ProBlogger where he laid down a lot of the details in his post "AdSense Change Rules - Stupidity Stupidity Stupidity" namely that the payment benefit for the referral program has been changed. Previously if you... ...refer a publisher to AdSense who then makes ...

Web CEO : Free SEO Software

Let me start off by saying it's been a long time since I've used Web CEO software myself, so I can't give this much of a review yet. (Being a part of a top digital marketing company has it's advantages, including a lot of proprietary tools) However, when I saw it offered for free I though it was worth checking out again and at least sharing the information. (affiliate link)   I downloaded the free version myself, I'll be using it over the next few weeks and will post a review, but don't wait on me - download it and see what you think of it ...
