A Search Engine’s Homepage The Key to Search Success?

From the smoke and rubble of the failed dot-com-bubble era emerged 3 contenders for the search crown. (4 if you count that interesting blip on the radar - Ask)  Each hungrily stockpiled features and tested innovative ideas in hopes of building an arsenal that would grant them superiority. Like the real life cold-war, smaller web properties began to be enveloped one after another as the search engines grew their empires through alliances, partnerships and corporate buyouts. Google Steady Front-Runner Today Google, Yahoo and MSN (and Ask... no seriously) still practice a sort of civil warfare, as they continue to fight for search ...

    Fun With Logo Equations

Apparently a little creative math + Photoshop + a Blogspot account goes a long way. The guys over at the Logologos blog have some interesting ideas about the origins of some pretty recognizable logos.  I found this through a post from logo designer David Airey over at the LogoDesignLove.com blog recently. Some of my favorites include the Apple logo equation depicted above, circa logo arithmatic below and the QuickTime logo math which depicts it's origin as an amalgam including elements of the Volvo logo, a speedometer and plenty of buffing. The Pylon Initiative : The Expanding Typography Lexicon

I just love typography and the depth to which one can obsess about the nuances of type face, kerning and stroke weight. I've always been envious of the clever way that designers incorporate typography into their design. Due to the small number of cross-platform web friendly fonts we see less typography creativity online than in print, but thanks to creative engineering (SiFR, CSS image replacement etc) we're starting to see a rise in typography in web design and the internet is a more enjoyable place because of it. A fabulous subject for a blog post... However, the subject of this post is ...

    CapitalOne Leads the Swoosh Comeback

Rarely do students of branding and logo design get such a brilliant real life example of 'what NOT to do' in regards to logo design. [ AzAkers ] CapitalOne, the folks who brought us that catchy, albeit overly-curoious tagline "What's in your wallet?", have unveiled their new & "improved" logo (as of January 30th). While it won't win any design awards, the new logo is a boon for graphic design instructors, mentors and aspiring graphic artists alike, because rarely do students of branding and logo design get such a brilliant real life example of 'what NOT to do' in regards to logo ...

3 Reasons Why Xerox’s New Logo Is Just Fine

I love it when a well known company announces a revamped logo! The design blogs go crazy. For just a few brief paragraphs, we get the opportunity to rant about the butchering of a well known corporate logo, or rave about the beautifully executed modern interpretation of a stagnant brand. For a brief moment we are free to cast judgement, with-out fear of reprisal (unless someone calls us out in the comments). [singlepic=123,150,,,]Unfortunately for me however, I'm about a week late to the "Xerox screwed up on their new logo" party. All of the best comments have already been made. Nearly every conversation I've read contained ...

Hot or Not Web Design Inspiration I recently discovered CommandShift3.com, a web design comparison/rating site that has turned out to be quite inspiring. This is a fantastic tool for any web designer looking for some design inspiration! The Obligatory WordPress Plugins post

I know what you're thinking - "Oh no, not ANOTHER one of those 'list o' plugins' posts!" - and essentially, that's what this post is - a list of super helpful WordPress plugins that I have found usefull enough to install and use them on this blog.  I browse through posts like this from time to time in hopes of finding another great widget or integrated/automated tidbit. In fact I've found a greater percentage of the plugins I currently use from posts just like this one. It's frustrating to visit a blog and think, "Wow, I love how they've done 'this; or 'that'!" only to find the ...
